Installing Permanent Outdoor Lighting

Proper outdoor lighting installation in Cleveland isn't just a matter of pulling out an extension cord and plugging a fixture into the end. That works for temporary lighting needs, but when the fixture is meant to be permanent, it should be installed in a safe, stable, and attractive way. Because a proper set-up involves wiring the new cord into the house and installing a switch, the work should be done by an electrician.

Steps for Installing Permanent Exterior Lighting

The first step is the most fun part. This is when the types of fixtures are decided on. Outdoor fixtures can serve many purposes, including highlighting landscape plants, marking walkways, and security. Sometimes, a set of lights can serve two or even all three of these purposes.

Once the fixtures are chosen, it's time to decide on how they'll be controlled. Standard switch-operated lights go on when someone remembers to flick the switch and stay that way until they are purposely turned off. This is fine when lights are only used occasionally. For example, some people only run porch and walkway lights when they expect to be coming in at night or are planning on having nighttime visitors.

When the lights are meant to come on every night and stay that way for a set period of time, there are two solutions that are better than manual control. One is to put the lighting on a timer. This is good when the user wants lights to come on during the evening, but go off again when it gets to be the middle of the night. Another solution is to use a light sensor. A sensor is best when the lights are to stay on from dusk all the way to dawn.

After the plans are figured out, it's time to call in the electrician. He or she will wire all of the lights to a circuit that includes the desired control mechanism. Simple groupings can all go on one circuit, while more complex ones may require several.

The installation of remote exterior fixtures will require an electrical cable to be buried underground and then wired to each one. Burying the cable protects it from the elements, stops it from being a trip hazard, and keeps the landscape beautiful. Once everything is done properly, the lights will come on and there'll be no ugly extension cords in sight.
