DYI Electrical Nightmares
How many times have you heard this: “How hard can it be?” or “I know a guy that can get this done cheap.” Or “I saw this done on TV…hand me my tools!” Well, we all know how it turned out! Clover Electric has 3 good reasons why you should hide the tools from your DIYer!
1. Doing electrical work yourself is never a good idea, unless you have all the tools, experience and knowledge of electrical circuits in today’s home. Not many of us do, that’s why a call to Clover Electric is such a good idea. You could end up putting a wire where it shouldn’t be, removing the wrong wire, or installing something incorrectly just because you saw it done in an on-line video.
Proper evaluation of your electrical system is a critical step in finding the problem, assessing the situation and the fixing electrical system in a home. Some would say, “I’m just replacing a broken outlet.” Well, that outlet is broken for a reason. You need to be able to evaluate the reason for the failure before fixing it. Then, you need to confirm that the wires you’re working with are truly positive, negative and neutral. Then you need to know all the tricks to properly wiring the outlet, installing the outlet, packing the wires in to the wall and testing the outlet before use.
2. Your buddy says he can get it done for you. So, you get the parts and he brings the tools. Here’s how the conversation goes:
“We’ll be done in a few minutes...hand me a beer.”
“This doesn’t look like it does at my house.”
“I don’t think it matters which way it goes in.”
“Let me check YouTube.”
“OK, it’s all done. Flip the switch.”
And, so on…
Hiring a friend can be a real issue if he gets hurt on your property, the parts are wrong, further damage is done to the electrical system or someone gets hurt. Better call the pros at Clover Electric.
3. Hire a pro from Clover Electric before you get in over our head. Here are our 6 rules when hiring a professional electrician.
When it comes to handling the electrical part of your DYI projects you need a fully licensed, highly experienced electrician on your team. You can rely on Clover Electric to help with your remodeling project. Whether you’re doing the work yourself or you’ve hired building contractors, we can work with you to make sure you get what you’re paying for. When you bring us in to the project, we can review the existing electrical system and discuss how it needs to be changed to meet your new needs. Or, you may be surprised that no changes need to be made. We’re here to help you make the right decisions.
Get it in writing. Some companies might lure you in with a great price on electrical work. But, half way through the project they find a problem. All of a sudden, the price goes way up. A reputable electrician knows what it takes to get the job done right and will be able to give you a price up-front with no surprises later on.
Be sure to check with your local building codes. You may need to get a permit for some electrical work. A reputable electrician is proud to show their work off to an inspector. The other guys may not want anyone to see their work. This can be dangerous. Did you know that some insurance companies won’t pay on a fire claim if a permit wasn’t pulled and a final inspection was done?
Look for experience. A company with just a few years of experience may not be there for you when you need them most. Look for an established company with hometown roots. Clover Electric is local and family owned. You can talk to the owner. Give them a call!
Beware of the lowest price. Contractors who cut corners can charge a lot less for their services. But who’s paying for it in the long run? You are! Budget contractors hire cheap labor and don’t have the resources to follow up if something goes wrong.
Do your research. Check out on-line reviews and ask for references. You can also call the Better Business Bureau to see if they’ve registered a lot of complaints. Keep in mind, a good contractor will stand by their work. Clover does!
The bottom line is you get what you pay for. Clover Electric will never let you down and will always be on your side to make sure everything is done safely, correctly and on budget.
