Remodel Your Home with Your Tax Refund

Remodeling season and tax refund season are fast approaching. Now is the time to plan how to use your tax refund to improve your home and add value at the same time!

1. Update Your Kitchen Lighting

There are many different lighting options you can choose from when it comes to kitchen lighting. Kitchen under-cabinet lighting can not only make simple kitchen tasks easier, it can create a whole new mood for a romantic, late evening dinner or a comfortable night light for midnight snackers!  Recessed lighting can fill your kitchen with light. Replacing existing ceiling lights with recessed lighting can dramatically change the lighting in a room. And, since the light fixture is recessed in to the ceiling it can make a room feel more spacious. Plus, when you install LED lighting the electricity saves are substantial.

2. Update Your bathroom Lighting

If you want to add value and luxury to your home, update the lighting in your bathrooms. Updating to recessed lighting or replacing old light fixtures with new ones can brighten and refresh bathrooms very quickly. Add a new coat of paint and your old bathroom is new again.

3. Exterior Lighting and Landscape Lighting Updates

What a difference a new porch light or yard light can make to the safety and beauty of your home. It’s an easy addition. You pick out the light at the home center and we’ll install it!

Landscape lighting plays an important part of a successful landscape design. You work hard to make your home’s landscaping look beautiful during the day. With landscape lighting, it can take on a whole new, stunning look at night. Landscape lighting highlights trees and plantings, creates dramatic accents to your home and is a great background during evening gatherings.

4. Replacement of Old Outlets and Switches

It’s not a glamorous way to spend your tax refund, but it’s a necessary home improvement for the safety and convenience of your family. If electrical outlets or switches make a slight buzzing noise, it could mean there’s loose wiring in the electrical box. Turn off the switch immediately to avoid a fire. Hot electrical outlets or switch plate covers can be a warning sign of a serious electrical problem. It's normal for some dimmer switches to feel warm to the touch, however if outlets and switches feel hot to the touch it indicates there’s an electrical wiring problem that should be checked by a licensed electrician as soon as possible. Clover Electric always recommends safety first!

Here’s an idea you may not have thought of: Tamper-resistant outlets have proven very effective in preventing electrical injuries resulting from attempting to insert foreign objects into receptacles. A shutter mechanism inside the receptacle blocks access to the contacts unless a 2-prong plug is inserted. This helps ensure hairpins, keys, and other metal objects will be locked out.

5. Electrical Repairs

If you plan on selling your home or staying there a long time, electrical repairs are ALWAYS a great investment. Here are 5 signs your home is in need of electrical repair:

Circuit Breakers That Keep Tripping. This indicates that circuits are drawing more current than they can safely provide. It can also mean a dangerous electrical fault on one or more circuits.
Flickering or Dimming Lights. This can be caused by a number of things including damaged wiring. It can also happen if the electrical system in your house is outdated or strained by electrical appliances and lights. Running appliances like an air conditioner, microwave or hair dryer shouldn’t cause flickering or dimming of the lights. If they do, you have a problem that needs to be addressed right away.
Do you have overloaded outlets? If power-strips and plug-in add-ons are tangling up your outlets, your electrical system is likely working beyond its intended capacity. Adding circuits can restore neatness and safety.

Get your home grounded! Many older homes have outlets without three-prong grounded plugs. This could indicate that your electrical wiring system is not fully grounded and could be a safety problem.

Water hazards. Wet locations such as kitchens, baths and laundry rooms require outlets protected by Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters GFCIs. Adding GFCIs will make your home code-compliant and safer. If you already have GFCIs be sure to test them regularly using the reset buttons.
